“Energy and the Political Economy of Nations” offers a comprehensive exploration of energy’s role from its basic definitions to its implications in today’s world. Energy, as the core concept that underpins all physical and engineered processes, is examined from its historical reliance on fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas, which have been instrumental in industrial development but detrimental due to significant greenhouse gas emissions. This reliance has led to critical environmental changes, highlighting the unsustainable nature of fossil fuels and the necessity for a shift to renewable sources like solar and wind, which are becoming more viable due to advancements and reduced costs.

About the Book (Accidental American)

Yonnas Kefle was only 17 when he fled Ethiopia’s military dictatorship, a regime that ruthlessly targeted his generation. This marked the beginning of his unexpected journey to becoming an “accidental American.” His autobiography spans over three decades of life in the United States, where he navigated the highs of the American Dream and the lows of the African-American Nightmare. Yonnas delves into Ethiopia’s rich historical tapestry, from the Era of Princes to the benevolent monarchy that fought to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty. He honors his forebears who repelled colonialist encroachments at the Battle of Adwa and resisted European fascist aggressions prior to World War II. His recounting continues through Ethiopia’s turbulent shift from monarchy to the oppressive People’s Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (PDRE), which unleashed a red terror campaign aimed at exterminating his student generation.

Upon resettling in America, Yonnas achieved substantial professional success in both the Department of Labor and the Department of State, only to confront the entrenched racial barriers impeding African-American advancement in government roles. Despite the promises of the Civil Rights Act, he encountered racial discrimination, which ultimately led him to reevaluate his career path. Redirecting his efforts towards education and community improvement, both in the US and Ethiopia, Yonnas’s narrative is not merely autobiographical but serves as a critical examination of ongoing racial injustices in America. His life story is a compelling account of overcoming monumental adversities and striving for social and historical rectitude across continents.
